The Director of R&D’s main responsibility is to lead the technical development of new formulas across several categories (Fragrance, personal care, bath & body, hair care, bath and body, skin care, color cosmetics, Home Fragrance). The Director of R&D has a keen understanding of formulation, raw materials, formula cost, and knows how to support brand initiatives. This role will partner with marketing to formulate and oversee R&D on cutting edge hair, face, skin, sun (Including OTC), and fragrance sku’s, and will own the technical development, validation, scale up, and commercialization of all new product sku’s. This role requires the person to be able to manage and partner with outside manufacturing teams to ensure quality product that meets or exceeds industry standards.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide technical support to product development from an overall branding perspective and for batch and fill processes
  • Provide recommendation on best labs per product category
  • Lead formula development from a technical standpoint while taking into account budgets, timing and risk management
  • Manage team of R&D managers
  • Directly or thru direct reports, own and track stability testing
  • Take the lead on any reformulation needs/troubleshoot issues
  • Keep abreast of latest manufacturing capabilities and material innovations, technology driven raw materials and ingredients
  • Partner with marketing on ideation and potential opportunities.
  • Strong background in timelines and manufacturing to be able to develop new launches within timing, costs and industrial constraints.
  • Work directly with suppliers and will need to be effective in communicating and understanding supplier’s manufacturing process to relay to the PD & Operations teams for decision making.
  • Evaluate contract manufacturer equipment; tooling and procedures utilizing pre-planned methods to ensure effective cost control and maximum productivity are achieved for all existing products
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment; must be self-motivated and self-directed.
  • Must be willing to travel.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s Degree – Chemistry, Engineering or related field of study
  • Minimum of 10+ years of beauty industry or transferable R&D experience preferred
  • Strong leadership ability with excellent communication skills and adept negotiating/influencing competencies.
  • Strong analytical skills – data analysis
